Hot Girls Are *Really* Into Beans Right Now

The TikTok trend and why I'm loving it. Plus a brownie recipe from All Recipes that truly slaps.

Years ago I heard Lacy Phillips (the very Lacy of the To Be Magnetic folklore) talk about the Bean Protocol on her podcast.

Flash forward to today, where I’m eating beans at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I think about beans. I dream about beans. I am beans.

Why are all the hot girls eating beans?

The Bean Protocol - or the lazier version of simply up to two cups a day as seen on TikTok girly accounts, promises detoxification, hormone balancing, reductions in sugar cravings, and more.

Should we take this into a conversation about the economy

…..and those quotes about the cost of groceries coming down?

Or perhaps the anti-operation beige movement from the likes of satirists like Gabrielle Minoli?

I’m not here to criticize the goop-ification of wellness via social media - in fact I’m here for it. Sure there might have been some subliminal persuasion that got me thinking I needed to undertake this experiment. But regardless, it still felt like my body craved it. My body wanted the chance to detox, which apparently beans do a great job of, by binding to toxins and hormones in the digestive tract.

The reason I started was a little simpler than fad…Though I’m happy the fad has caught up to me. I needed to manage my PCOS symptoms and balance out the havoc wreaking in my body. I wanted a quick and easy, high-fiber way to get full in the winter when the days are frigid here in Coeur D’Alene. I didn’t want to have to overthink anything. Beans made it easy. A can a day keeps my woes away.

I stocked up on cans (refried or at least cooked, vegetarian, with as few ingredients as possible). I top refried beans with last night’s roasted veggies and maybe a protein. At dinner, I eat the second half of the can with whatever is on our menu based on our Linc Box delivery - which if you haven’t checked out, please do. Local, crazy affordable produce and proteins delivered weekly makes eating clean and organic easy and expanding your palette exciting again. Tomorrow, the cycle repeats: beans for breakfast with leftovers, beans for dinner with…whatever.

I’ve noticed:

  • Clearer skin

  • Better digestion (though I don’t have an intolerance to beans, and that’s pretty important here)

  • Less confusion and food noise when it comes to eating (as I’ve discussed, I was diagnosed with 2 eating disorders so ‘food noise’ refers to the overwhelm and obsession I usually experience about both eating and avoiding food).

What I think I’m noticing (but can’t prove…yet)
